Standard Response Protocols
The Rocklin Unified School District (RUSD) encourages all students, families, and staff members to be aware of their surroundings while at school. If you See Something, then Say Something to a trusted adult. Rocklin Unified works in close collaboration with the Rocklin Police Department and School Resource Officers.

Unified Language: Rocklin Unified and its schools use standardized terms (Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter) so teachers, staff, students, and local emergency agencies (such as the Rocklin Police Department and Rocklin Fire Department) use the same clear, direct language during an incident.

Routine Drills: Schools practice regular emergency drills throughout the academic year to familiarize students and staff with the exact actions tied to each directive, turning procedural safety into muscle memory without inducing trauma.

First Responder Alignment: By adopting these protocols, local police and fire departments know exactly what condition a campus is in when arriving on scene, significantly shortening response times and improving scene management.
Standard Response Protocols
The Hold Action is used when the hallways in the school need to remain clear. Classroom learning will still take place as normal during a Hold, but students may not be able to change classes until after the Hold has been lifted.
The Secure Action is called when there is a threat or hazard outside of the school building. Secure uses the physical facility's security to protect everyone inside. During Secure, all students and staff are brought into the secure building and all exterior doors are locked. Classes can continue uninterrupted inside the building.
Lockdown is called when there is a threat or hazard inside the school building. The Lockdown Action advises making rooms look unoccupied by locking classroom doors, offices, and other securable areas; moving occupants out of the line of sight of corridor windows; turning off lights; and having occupants remain silent. If students cannot get behind a locked door, they are trained to self-evacuate. If your child contacts you to let you know that they safely self-evacuated, please contact RUSD’s District Office at 916-624-2428 to notify us that your child is safe.
Evacuate is called when there is a need to move people from one location to another. During an evacuation, students and staff are asked to move from one location to another in an orderly fashion.
Shelter is called when specific protective actions are needed based on a threat or hazard. Sheltering requires that all students and staff follow response directives based on the threat or hazard.
