Weeklong Camp Experience Transitions to Virtual Learning Due to Pandemic

WHAT: Sixth grade students from Breen Elementary School will attend the Sly Park Environmental Education Center - virtually. Students will participate in the time-honored tradition of attending Sly Park in a new re-imagined experience with live 45-minute lessons that align with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

WHY: While the physical camp is closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, participating students will experience five days of virtual camp to learn how to be citizen scientists, capable of tapping into their natural scientist skills to better understand, take care of, and advocate for their local environment. Daily lessons include synchronous and asynchronous components designed and sequenced to support students' academic, social and emotional learning.

WHEN: The virtual Sly Park camp will take place Monday, April 12 - 16, 2021, from 8 a.m. - 10 a.m. and 10 a.m. - 12 noon.
  • Monday, April 12: Observation - Students will work on building awareness, making accurate observations, and finding their heart rate.
  • Tuesday, April 13: Investigation - Students will observe and investigate biotic and abiotic matter and discuss structure and function.
  • Wednesday, April 14: Ecosystems - Students will focus on ecosystem components, interactions and trophic levels, and balance.
  • Thursday, April 15: Designing Solutions - Students will discuss human impact, basic human needs, and engineering design and problem solving.
  • Friday, April 16: Stewardship - Students will review the weeklong set of activities, discuss plans of action, and become stewards of science.

WHERE: Breen Elementary, 2751 Breen Drive, Rocklin, CA 95765

WHO: Breen Elementary students in sixth grade will participate in lessons that Sly Park camp counselors will lead. Breen Elementary teachers will help facilitate the lessons during the daily virtual camp experience. The Sly Park Environmental Education Center is part of the Sacramento County Office of Education.
